This month, we’re talking about self-care. It’s been a long winter and maybe you haven’t taken the greatest care of yourself. Summer is coming and it’s time to get yourself looking and feeling your best! While self-care is often marketed predominantly to women, we believe it’s for everyone! We’re discussing body self-care from top to bottom, starting with hair.
Maintaining the health of your hair is essential to feeling your best. Using the right shampoo and conditioner for your hair type and overall hair needs can have a huge impact on the health of your hair. With so many choices between regular and high-end brands, be sure to do your research and see what is best for your exact hair type. Reading reviews of products can also be a great way to see if something is worth the money or if you’re better off with a more standard product. Remember, price doesn’t always equate to quality!
Hair masks and oils can be an additional way to get nourishment and moisture into your hair after a long and dry winter. Even if they appear just for women, they can be useful for anyone. Like shampoo and conditioner, masks and oils have different purposes so be sure to read the label to see what you’re putting onto your hair. Don’t want to sit for half an hour waiting for the nourishment to soak in? An easy tip is to pick a hair mask that is 5 minutes or less and do it in the shower while you’re doing your other body care. By the time you’re done, the mask will be ready to wash out and can be a nice replacement for conditioner once in a while.
Next up is self-care for the face and body. The first step to renewed skin is often a scrub. Using a scrub can help exfoliate the dead skin away, leaving fresh and soft new skin. After exfoliating, use a face moisturizer and a body lotion to ensure the skin stays supple and soft. It’s important to moisturize daily, especially during the colder months of the year. If it’s a hassle, do it before bed when the lotion can soak into your skin during the night. Extra products like masks or body oils can be an added way to get hydration. Living through nearly 6 months of cold can truly take a toll on your skin. It’s all about the moisture!
Taking care of our feet can be overlooked in the winter months since they’re often hidden in bulky winter boots. But keeping them in good condition is key when walking around on them all day. Using a foot scrub is a great way to get rid of dead skin, especially on the heel area. It’s easy to do in the shower along with your normal routine. Like the rest of your body, put on lotion after exfoliating to lock in moisture.
Some feet need specialized care that can only be performed by a Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) with the right formal certified training. Advanced footcare, also known as medical footcare, can be for anyone having issues with their feet. The nurse does a complete exam of a client’s feet before starting the footcare to provide personalized service. Individuals with diabetes, compromised health, cancer, and heart conditions should receive advanced footcare services.
