How does having more energy and an overall greater sense of well-being in all areas of life sound? Too good to be true right? Keep reading!
People tend to slow down as they age. This can be due to many reasons, including health problems, weight gain and chronic pain. Maybe you are someone who was never active growing up because you were never interested or not the ‘athletic one’. Or maybe you stopped recently because you found certain exercises difficult. Whatever your reason may be, I seriously hope you will start to make some changes after reading this.
Maintaining independence is one of the best reasons to stay active. Don’t you want to take your grandkids to the park and be able to do more than watch them from the bench? Staying strong and flexible will also help with basic activities of daily living (ADLs). You shouldn’t have to be afraid of falling; staying active increases your balance and coordination. Being able to pick food up off the floor, making your own bed, and even getting low enough for the toilet is a huge part of personal independence.
Having reservations about getting or staying active is normal, but don’t let them stop you from living your best life.
Not everyone will be able to run until the age of 85, but if you can, good for you! If your sweet spot is doing basic chair exercises with some friends, work it!
You need to be comfortable and confident doing what your body allows, while slowly pushing the boundaries of what you THINK your physical body can do. As a personal trainer and older adults specialist, it is amazing to see people doing more than they physically thought possible. Consult your doctor, get some help from a professional and while listening to your body, see what it is capable of.
Not only does staying active have physical benefits, but it includes mental health benefits as well. When you are eating well and taking care of your body, you are able to cope with stress and fight illness better. It increases your positive moods and can help slow the progression of brain disorders such as Alzheimer’s.
Being physically active can also help build your social life. Find a yoga class for your age group and meet some new people. Invite a friend to go on a hike with you! Whatever activities you enjoy at whatever stage of life, try inviting someone to go along with you. You can encourage and motivate each other to stick with it. Simple things like having a schedule will make it a habit and keep you motivated.
Staying physically active as you age is one of the best things you can do for YOU. Taking care of yourself should be a priority, regardless of the responsibilities you have. Don’t be afraid to try something new or ask questions, we are all learning new things everyday!
Until next time,
Keep living your best life,
Kait
