Looking to get out and be social? Want a fun activity to try? We’ve got you covered with our monthly activity article.
Each month we will highlight a different activity or event for grown-ups to get out and try. The idea is to get a group of people together to socialize, have fun, and try something new.
The month of May is full of blooms. Instead of buying a pre-made arrangement for your porch or balcony, why not create your own? Making your own flower arrangement is a great way to get the creative juices flowing, is relaxing, and is easy to do with one or two friends or in a group.
Many garden centers are offering classes this time of year, all you need to do is sign up, pay a small fee, and show up. They will have everything set, you choose the planter and they provide the dirt, the instruction, and the plants. You will get to spend the hour socializing and creating. And will end the class with a beautiful planter for your home.
Alternatively, you could organize your own flower arranging afternoon with friends. Get out to the garden center, pick up supplies and bring them back home to plant, chat and enjoy some afternoon tea.
When it comes to creating a beautiful planter, remember it’s all about thrillers, fillers and spillers.
Thrillers are the tall statement plant or piece in the pot. This could be tall grasses, sticks, or flowers.
Fillers are those mid-height plants, which could include heliotrope, coleus, African daisies (osteospermum) or dwarf dahlias.
Spillers fill in the bottom of the planter and cascade over with their trailing forms. Some good options for these include ivy geranium, sweet potato vine, bacopa or licorice plant (Helichrysum petiolare).
When choosing the thrillers, fillers and spillers, be sure that their sun requirements meet your needs, and that they all contain similar moisture requirements as well.
