Spending time by ourselves is becoming more and more popular. Natural introverts love it and thrive on their own, but being able to spend time alone is something useful for everyone. If you’re looking for ideas of things to do on your own, we’ve got you covered!
Parks are a great place to spend time alone, especially if you live in an apartment where you can’t step outside into a backyard. Most cities have lots of different parks, big and small. Check out a new park each weekend and find your favourite! National Book Lovers Day is coming up on August 9th so why not bring along a book and read in the park. You can do so by sitting on a bench or bringing your own picnic blanket to lay out on. Just be sure to check the weather before you head out on your park day as you don’t want to get caught in the rain!
Are you a drink lover, such as coffee, tea, or smoothies? Café hopping can be a great way to spend a Sunday! Local cafés and big chains are all relevant depending on what vibe you’re going for. It’s relaxing to sit and sip your drink while reading, journaling, listening to music, or simply people watching. Cafés typically have something for everyone no matter what you enjoy. If you’re someone who likes to move, get your drink to go and head out on a walk around the neighbourhood. You’ll enjoy your beverage while getting your steps in!
If you’re looking for other ways to move your body, why not join a local varsity league and play an outdoor sport all summer long! Most cities have leagues or clubs that play a variety of sports and you don’t have to know anyone there to join. It’s a great way to meet people while also having tons of fun!
You can look into local social clubs that gather for activities once or twice a month. There are often clubs for all backgrounds, genders, ages, and interests. Meet some new people and partake in activities that you may have not otherwise done alone. Can’t find exactly what you’re looking for? Start your own club! With social media, you can easily start a club and promote it online for others to join.

Date Night
If you’re part of a couple, finding things to do other than sitting at home can sometimes be challenging. We’ve put together some fun summer ideas for things you can do with your significant other that involve getting out of the house!
Have date night at the park! The park truly is for anyone and is a great place to get outside and enjoy nature without going far from home. Instead of sitting in at a restaurant, grab takeout and head to your local park. Spread out your feast on a blanket and enjoy the warm weather and the sunset. Checking out the local food trucks and stands is also a great option for food at the park. If you prefer to enjoy your food fresh, sit out on a patio at your favourite restaurant! Patios are lovely in the summer, especially later in the evening when the sun is setting and it’s not so blisteringly hot.
Check out the farmers market on a weekend morning. Farmers markets are full of happy people selling the most incredible local products. Depending on the size of your local market, you can find so much there as you do your weekly shop. The tastiest and freshest produce is always from the market!
Fair season is upon us and they never disappoint! Head on out to check out the food, games, and rides on a weekend day or evening. Just be sure to bring some cash although most places offer cashless options these days. Regardless of how you pay, there’s great fun and nostalgia to be had at the fair and the two of you will be taken back to sweet times!
For the active couple, we suggest going for a long hike. You may have to drive a bit outside of where you’re living if you’re in the city, but we say it’s worth it! Hiking is good exercise, fun to do with someone else, and allows you to relish in the beauty of nature. There is nothing like the peace you feel when surrounded by trees. A quick search will bring up local hiking trails that you can check out!
Another great way to get some exercise with your loved one is by checking out a local sport court! Communities often offer some sort of court to play sports on, such as badminton or tennis. Pickleball has taken off in recent years as a popular sport! Played with either 2 or 4 people on a tennis court, it requires minimal equipment and is a social sport offering amazing mental and physical benefits.
With the Gang
Spending time with friends is a great way to get outdoors and enjoy all that summer has to offer! Some activities are better suited to groups so we have some ideas below to get you started.
National Beach Day is on August 30th so why not celebrate at the beach? With its wide open spaces of sand, the beach is a great hang for any group of friends. You can spend time splashing around in the water or laying out to catch some rays. It’s also a great space to play some water or beach games depending on what you prefer. You could also head to the local soccer field or park to play games that require open space.
Local events happening in your city are a fun weekend outing for friends. Communities usually have various events happening each weekend in the summer and many of them are summer-only. Take advantage and check out the events that are free to enter and enjoy. There’s usually something for everyone!
Have a barbecue and invite everyone over for some delicious eats! Ask everyone to bring an item and do it potluck style or invite everyone over a little early to all cook together. Summer is the time to take advantage of the barbecue season and to eat a delicious and healthy meal with family and friends.
As you can see, there are activities for every type of person to enjoy the beautiful summer weather! Why not partake in one of these activities this weekend? We’re sure you’ll have a great time!
